Replay of the 2011 NLCS

With spring in the air, and baseball right around the corner like most fans I am getting totally excited for the season. While my beloved Brewers squad is going through a rebuilding process right now, I still have the hope that they will catch all the lucky breaks and shock the world and go to the playoffs. Brewer playoff history is not kind to a Brewer fan. 1982 was our only World Series appearance, and while they were favored to win the Series against the Cardinals and bring home a World Championship to the city of Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin it wasn't meant to be. Brewer fans had to wait 26 years for their next playoff appearance. 2008 the Brewers were a upcoming team. Finally seeing the fruits of a rebuild in players like Corey Hart, Ben Sheets, JJ Hardy, Prince Fielder, and Ryan Braun. All of these core players were developed in the Milwaukee farm system, and the fans were ready for a winner. World Series hopes were dashed with the Brewers losing the NLCS to what would become the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies. The Crew lost their way under new manager Gene Macha for the 2009-2010 seasons. However, it was the lead up to what was to be a World Series run in 2011.

2011 brought the Brewers a Central Division Crown, and something called "Beast Mode" (which was something that Price Fielder brought to the team from one of his kids). They ended up 96-66 and had thumpers throughout the line-up. Plus arguably the best 3 and 4 hitters in the game (Braun/Fielder). Plus they finally had a very solid pitching rotation with the anchor being former CY Young winner Zack Grienke. However, World Series dreams were not meant to be for the Brewers in 2011 as they lost to what again would become the World Champions that year St. Louis Cardinals.

Even  though in real life the Brewers lost to the Cardinals in 6 games, was that how it was suppose to play out? Or were they suppose to win the NLDS and go the World Series and face the Texas Rangers? With the help of Dynasty League Baseball online I decided to find out for myself. I ran a best of 7 game simulation through the sites "SERIES" function. I made sure that the Brewers had home field and that the games were to be played in October. While weather effects wouldn't be a problem in Milwaukee and Miller Park, it could be a problem when the series moved to St.Louis. Below is some of my recaps of each game along with the box scores.

Game 1:

I thought that game one would be easy peasy for the Crew. It was Yovani Gallardo vs Kyle Loshe for game one the roof was closed and a very comfortable 61 degrees in the park. One of the largest crowds ever in Miller Park and with the roof closed the the crowd was so loud that it made the seats shake. Yo, finishes up his warm up pitches and we're ready to go.  Right off the bat Yovani walks Rafael Furcal then gets John Jay to fly out to right. Albert Pujols follows with a single, and Yo gets out of the inning getting Matt Holliday to ground out and Lance Berkman to fly out. a big sigh of relief comes out of my mouth, and I get a little excited with my boys coming to the plate. Rickie Weeks starts off the right way and gets a single, then Lohse gets the next 3 hitters out.
We move to the 2nd inning and Yo gets David Freeze to strike out. Then against the odds Yadier Molina steps to the plate hits a 391 foot home run to left field to put the bad guys up 1-0.
The score stays 1-0 till the top of the 3rd. In a inning that will go down as one of the worst innings in Brewer history.  First 3 batters all get base hits, then Matt Holliday gets a double to score 2 runs. Berkman gets a walk, Freese gets a single and scores another 2 runs, 4-0. Starting to sweat. Yadi singles and scores 2 more runs.  Skip Schumaker singles and scores 1. Now the score is 6-0. Marco Estrada is now warming up. Kyle Lohse goes for a sacrifice and moves up Yadi and Shumaker. I bring in Marco to stop the bleeding. He goes and gives up a single to Furcal, and Molina scores. Now 7-0. John Jay then singles and scores Schumaker. Why won't this inning end!? Now I have to deal with Phat Albert, who goes and hits a 403 foot home run. Score is now 11-0 and the Brewer fans and running for the exits.
There is no more scoring until the Brewers close the gap to 10 when Prince doubles in Nyjer Morgan, however that was all they could get. That one run must have pissed off the Cardinals, cause they come up to bat in the top of the 5th and score 5 more runs! Now the Crew is looking at a 15 run deficit.
Brewers show some life in the bottom of the 6th and score 4 runs. Everything remains clam until the Cardinals score another 2 in the top of the 9th cause a 11 run lead is not enough. In a feudal attempt for a come back the Brewers score 1, and game finally over with a 18-6 score.

Game 2:

After the shellacking the Brewers took in game one everyone was wondering if they would be able to let it go and bounce back to win the next game. There was no time to rest and catch their breath as in less than 24 hours game 2 was to be played. 2011 MVP Ryan Braun told the Milwaukee Journal "Yeah, it hurts, but we have the guys to take this series and we will." Game 2 starter is former CY Young winner Zach Grienke who even though didn't start game 1, is probably Milwaukee's ACE. in true ACE form Zach comes in and establishes the tone by getting a 1-2-3 1st inning. Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks steps up and hits a double to deep right. Nyjer Morgan advances Weeks to 3rd with a ground out to the pitcher. Prince Fielder steps to the plate and hits a absolute 428 ft bomb to straight center putting the Crew up 2 in the 1st.
With some early runs behind him Zach comes out and  gets another 1-2-3 inning. Brewers come to the plate in the 2nd. In who could be the biggest defensive liability in Brewer history Yuniesky Beatancourt comes up with the only thing he is good at in 2011 and hits a solo home run to put the Crew up 3-0.  In typical LaRussa Cardinal fashion he signals Carpenter to hit Jonathan Lucroy. Grienke  grounds out to 3rd but moves Lucory up to 2nd. Weeks then singles to move Lucory or 3rd. Nyjer knocks in  Lucroy with a single, bringing up Ryan Braun, who proceeds to get a base hit knocking in another run. Prince flies out to right and Nyjer tags and scores from 3rd. Crew up now 6-0.
We jump to the top of the 5th where Grienke gets his first blemish of the day giving up a solo home run to Lance Berkman. Well, Prince Fielder didn't like the Berkman home run, so he hits another 427 foot home run to put the Brewers up 7-1. In what is a battle of solo home runs John Jay gets in the action and hits a solo home run in the top of the 6th. Score now 7-2 Brewers.
Cardinals threaten in the 7th getting bases loaded with 2 outs for Ryan Theriot who pinch hit for Furcal. Theriot singles to left driving in Berkman, the 3rd base coach decides to send Freese home. Ryan Braun guns it home and throws out Freese at the plate! Whew. That could have been bad.
Top of the 8th I bring in Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) to protect the lead to the 9th. During his run in Milwaukee K-Rod was known for giving up home runs, and he didn't disappoint in this game. K-Rod gives up a solo shot to Matt Holliday. Score now 7-4 Brewers. John Axford comes in the 9th and gets the save! Brewers come back and tie the series 1-1 after a horrible game one loss.

Game 3:

After the huge win for the Crew it was travel day and go to St Louis for game 3. Shaun Marcum on the hill for the Crew and Jamie Garcia for the Red birds. It was a quiet first 2.1 innings, then the Brewers got on the board on a base hit from Rickie Weeks who scored on 3 base error by Matt Holliday. It turns out to be a pitching duel through out the game. The Cardinals get on the board from a John Jay single driving in Furcal to tie up the game 1-1. Then the Cards take the lead in the mid 8th When John Jay again drove in another run scoring Tyler Green on a single. Cards 2-1. Oh who gave up the run? That's right K-Rod.
Backs up against the wall and on the road. Have no fear as the Crew has Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder coming up to bat in the 9th. Braun strikes out, and Fielder grounds out. Down to their last hope .228 hitting Casey McGehee. With the crowd standing and cheering waiting for the 3rd out and the Cardinals to take a 2-1 game lead in the series. McGehee swings...Hey, this is deep...Get up..Get out of here...GONE, FOR MCGEHEE!!! Tie ballgame! Brewers are able to get a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th. We are going to extra innings! After Corey Hart grounds out to the short stop, Jonathan Lucory singles to center. With Marco Estrada up to the plate.
